er in the Arts at the Carpenter Center\, is conducting a workshop with Har
vard students across academic disciplines to develop a performance based o
n movement\, shapes\, and sound. It will be presented this Friday\, April
3\, at the Harvard Dance Center in the Radcliffe Yard at 60 Garden Street.
Rainer is an American choreographer and filmmaker\, whose work is freque
ntly challenging and experimental. Rainer studied modern dance at the Mart
ha Graham School and later with Merce Cunningham and was one of the organi
zers of the Judson Dance Theater\, a focal point for vanguard activity in
the dance world throughout the 1960s. Rainer is noted for an approach to d
ance that treats the body more as the source of an infinite variety of mov
ements than as the purveyor of emotion or drama. Many of the elements she
 employed-such as repetition\, patterning\, tasks\, and games-later became
standard features of modern dance. Rainer sometimes included filmed sequen
ces in her dances\, and in the mid-1970s she began to turn her attention t
o film directing. Her early films do not follow narrative conventions\, in
stead combining reality and fiction\, sound and visuals\, to address socia
l and political issues. Rainer directed several experimental films about d
ance and performance\, including Lives of Performers (1972)\, Film About a
Woman Who (1974)\, and Kristina Talking Pictures (1976). Her later films
include The Man Who Envied Women (1985)\, Privilege (1990)\, and MURDER an
d murder (1996). The Josep Lluis Sert Practitioner in the Arts\, a positi
on created in 1986\, provides honoraria for visiting artists in all media
to spend several days in formal and informal activities appropriate to the
Department of Visual and Environmental Studies\, including lectures\, dem
 onstrations\, screenings\, seminars\, readings\, performances\, and close
work with students of the department. The Sert Practioner program is made
possible by a gift from Robert Gardner '48\, A.M. '58\, former director of
the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts and chair of the Department of V
isual and Environmental Studies\, and founding director of Harvard's Film
 Study Center.\n\nStart time: 7:00 p.m.
