_A_Visit_to_the_Dressmaker\nEvent Date Begin: 2010-06-11\nEvent Date End:
2010-10-24\n\nThe Wenham Museum's summer featured exhibit will showcase so
me of the Museums' most beautiful Gilded Age dresses dating from the 1860'
s to the 1890's. The gallery will have the look and feel of a high-end 19t
h century dressmaker's shop and display extravagant fashion creations from
one of the most extravagant periods in fashion history. The exhibit will
run from June 11th to October 24th. Visitors will see a wide array of fash
ion styles\, everything from the bustle to the development of the dress sl
eeve. A woman of this time period would change her dresses throughout the
day for different occasions\; morning visits\, afternoon strolls and eveni
ng dinners or other special events The &ldquo\;Gilded Age&rdquo\; in Amer
ica was the period between the end of the Civil War in 1865 and the beginn
ing of the 20th century. The term was coined by Mark Twain and Charles Dud
ley Warner in their 1873 novel The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today. Although t
he novel pokes fun at some of the excesses of wealth\, it was that very sa
me wealth that provided the opportunity for remarkable creativity in indus
try and art\, including the art of fashion. The dresses featured progress
throughout the decades and visitors will be able to see iconic 19th centur
y fashion. The exhibit showcases over a dozen gowns including a copy of an
18th century dress made by a Boylston Street dressmaker and worn to a Fan
cy Dress Ball in 1896. The dress is made with silk taffeta and the effect
of 18th century &ldquo\;panniers&rdquo\; is achieved with an ingenious sys
tem of tapes and buttons under the skirt. There is also a gown designed by
Charles Frederick Worth\, the father of haute couture. The silk damask is
woven with a sunflower motif. For the younger woman\, a pretty summer dre
ss in an open-weave silk embellished with coordinating silk tassels\, will
  be featured.\n\nStart time: Open Tuesday - Sunday 10 AM - 4 PM. Closed M
ondays\, except Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents' Day. Closing at
1pm on New Year's Eve\, Thanksgiving Eve\, and Christmas Eve. Closed most
major holidays including: New Year's Day\, Easter Sunday\, Independence D
ay\, Labor Day\, Thanksgiving Day\, and Christmas Day. Open Martin Luther
 King Day\, President's Day\, and Veterans' Day.
