 country-folk performers of her day\, Iris Dement grew up singing gospel mu
 sic and later explored country\, folk\, and R&B\, drawing influence from L
 oretta Lynn\, Johnny Cash\, Bob Dylan\, and Joni Mitchell.   Dement made h
 er recording debut in 1992\, when her LP Infamous Angel\, won almost unive
 rsal acclaim for her pure\, evocative vocal style and spare\, heartfelt so
 ngcraft. Her third LP\, 1996's eclectic The Way I Should\, marked a dramat
 ic change not only in its more rock-influenced sound but also in its subje
 ct matter\; where Dement's prior work was introspective and deeply persona
 l\, The Way I Should was fiercely political\, tackling topics like sexual 
 abuse\, religion\, government policy\, and Vietnam. In 1999\, she collabor
 ated with country man John Prine on his album\, In Spite of Ourselves. Dem
 ent recorded four duets with Prine that earned her a Grammy nod the follow
