 spired by similar subjects: the war and the division of their country and 
 its former capital\, Berlin. Germany's continuing separation in the 1950s 
 before the Wall and in the Sixites after the Wall inspired many films. How
  these  topics are reflected on film\, however\, varies greatly. To commem
 orate the 20th anniversary of German unification\, the Goethe-Institut con
 trasts West and East German productions and their handling of these subjec
 ts. Similarities\, traditions and connections between the two film culture
 s\, existing in distinctly different social systems during the Cold War bu
