8\nEvent Date End: 2011-02-27\n\nBook and Lyrics by Susan Kosoff. Music by

an Kosoff. Musical Direction and arrangements by Jonathan Goldberg. Scenic

erine Doherty as Mary Lennox.\n\nA cherished story that has enchanted gene
rations of readers\, The Secret Garden will take to the stage this winter
at Wheelock Family Theatre with musical flair. Susan Kosoff and Jane Staab
are at the helm of this creative endeavor\, contributing original book\,
music\, and lyrics to the 1919 Frances Hodgson Burnett classic.\n\nAfter a
deadly cholera epidemic scourges India\, the newly orphaned Mary Lenox&md
ash\;a cold\, lonely girl of the British elite&mdash\;finds herself residi
ng in her uncle's gloomy Yorkshire estate. Her uncle Archibald Craven\, co
nsumed with mourning for his deceased wife Lily\, is often absent from Mis
sethwaite Manor\, fleeing the haunting memories of a once-fulfilled and bl
issful life. Bored inside the confining castle walls\, Mary&mdash\;intrigu
ed by chatter of a secret garden&mdash\; journeys to find such a garden\,
enlisting the aid of a tentative Colin (Archibald's son)\, who is bed-ridd
en and dangerously ill.\n\nA story acknowledging the fears and fancies of
young people\, celebrating the escapist yearnings in all of us\, and\, ult
imately\, realizing that sometimes we must leave our surroundings to find
our true selves&mdash\;The Secret Garden is an homage to the healing power
 s of nature&mdash\;sometimes tangible and sometimes ethereal&mdash\;that c
an nurse the seemingly most impenetrable of wounds. \n\nIn Burnett's origi
nal words: &ldquo\;Where you tend a rose\, my lad\, a thistle cannot grow.
&rdquo\; And in today's chaotic and often scary world\, one little girl's
determination to tend roses can be an inspiration to us all.\n\nStart time
