 ctions_in_the_Arthur_M_Sackler_Museum\nEvent Date Begin: 2011-04-28\nEvent
Date End: 2011-04-28\n\nIvan Gaskell\, Senior Lecturer\, History Departme
 nt\, Harvard University\; and Laurel Thatcher Ulrich\, 300th Anniversary U
 niversity Professor\, History Department\, Harvard University\n\nAs part o
f their multivenue exhibition Tangible Things\, Ivan Gaskell and Laurel Ul
rich introduce objects from other Harvard collections into the Sackler Mus
eum. These novel placements gently destabilize existing displays and subtl
y confound visitors' expectations\, emphasizing characteristics of the mis
placed objects that may be overlooked in their normal settings. This talk
will consider these juxtapositions and prompt viewers to ask questions abo
ut the categories into which things are habitually sorted. What is natural
? What is artificial? What is art?\n\nThis series considers objects from m
ore than one point of view. The informal talks\, many of them by Harvard A
rt Museums curators\, conservators\, and educators and Harvard University
faculty members\, are designed to stimulate thinking about works of art an
d to encourage participants to explore their own ways of seeing.\n\nFree w
ith the price of admission. Open to the public.\n\nLimited to 25 participa
 nts\; please arrive early.\n\nStart time: 3:30pm-4:30pm
