  is to introduce students to the possibilities of the photographic portrai
 t in a contemporary setting. Technical aspects of portrait photography\, s
 uch as light\, color\, and composition will be focused on\, as well as the
  conceptual and historical elements that portrait photography makes preval
 ent. Various styles of portrait photography will be discussed\, such as fi
 ne art\, documentary\, fashion and the self portrait\, allowing students t
 o be aware of and experiment with the practice that best suites their inte
 nt. Photographers including Julia Margret Cameron\, August Sander\, Cindy 
 Sherman\, Martin Schoeller\, Loretta Lux\, Katy Grannan\, among others\, w
 ill be discussed in order to make apparent the history and transformation 
 of the portrait within the realm of photography.  Students will encouraged
  to examine the relationship to their subject\, as well as the exchange be
 tween artist\, sitter and spectator.  Most importantly\, the goal of this 
 course is to open students to the limitless potential of the photographic 
 portrait\, allowing them to leave the course confident with the tools to p
 ursue making alluring\, interesting photographs.\n\nStart time: Meets Frid
