_Concord_and_the_Civil_War\nEvent Date Begin: 2011-04-26\nEvent Date End:
2011-09-18\n\nAs 2011 marks the 'th anniversary of the beginning of the Am
erican Civil War\, the Concord Museum in historic Concord\, Massachusetts\
, is commemorating the occasion with a special exhibition\, 'When Duty Whi
spers: Concord and the Civil War.' \n\nOn April 19\, 1861\, the town of C
oncord was united in readiness for war\, arguably more ready and more unit
ed than on the famed date of April 19\, 1775. Just one week after Fort Sum
ter had been fired on\, the men of the Concord Infantry answered President
Lincoln's call for troops\, and the town as one family saw them off. The
scene\, with variations\, was repeated that April in countless communitie
 s in Pennsylvania\, New York and New England. Still\, although Concord's e
xperience was in some ways typical\, Concord can rightly claim a distincti
ve role in formulating the public opinions that made the devastating war s
eem not just right\, but necessary.\n\n'When Duty Whispers: Concord and th
e Civil War' features objects from the Concord Museum collection&mdash\;so
 me never before exhibited&mdash\;including portraits\, uniforms\, firearms
 \, swords\, flags\, broadsides\, engravings\, correspondence\, and newspap
ers. The exhibition also brings together selections from the remarkable c
ollections of the William Munroe Special Collections at the Concord Free P
ublic Library\; an extraordinary group of Gettysburg relics from the Carli
sle Historical Society\; a charcoal study for the monumental painting &ldq
uo\;Memories of Antietam&rdquo\; by Elizabeth Wentworth Roberts from the C
oncord Art Association\; and representative examples from a private collec
tion of Springfield arms. In addition\, a recently-conserved flag of the 5
5th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry\, one of two black infantry regiments
from Massachusetts during the Civil War\, is included courtesy of The Mid
 dlesex School.\n\nStart time: Monday-Saturday 9-5\, Sunday 12-5 (Sundays J
 une -August 9:00-5:00)
