 urn-of-the-century Scandinavia. Middle-aged Fredrik Egerman brings his you
 ng wife Anne to a play starring &ldquo\;the one and only&rdquo\; Desiree A
 rmfeldt. It is soon revealed that Desiree and Fredrik are in fact former l
 overs. The two begin to rekindle their romance\, enraging Desiree's curren
 t lover\, a pompous Count. In her attempts to win Fredrik back\, the actre
 ss has her sage mother invite the Egerman family to their county estate. T
