 on\, D.C.\, Tony Horwitz is a graduate of Brown University and Columbia Un
 iversity's Graduate School of Journalism. He worked for many years as a re
 porter and spent a decade overseas as a foreign correspondent in Australia
 \, Europe\, Africa\, and the Middle East. After returning to the United St
 ates\, he won the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting and worked as a st
 aff writer for The New Yorker before becoming a full-time author. Four of 
 his books have been national bestsellers. In Confederates in the Attic (19
 99)\, Horwitz embarked on a search through the American South for places a
 nd people still held in thrall by America's greatest conflict\, where the 
 ghosts of the Lost Cause are resurrected through ritual and remembrance. H
 is newest work\, Midnight Rising: John Brown and the Raid that Sparked the
  Civil War (2011)\, explores John Brown's Harpers Ferry uprising and the s
 tory of the men and women who launched a desperate strike at the slavehold
 ing South.\n\nThe theme of the 2011-2012 Lowell Lecture series is &ldquo\;
