 nfluential director of the Berlin museums (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin) wh
 o recognized quality in works of art and systematically expanded the colle
 ctions under his care. More than a connoisseur\, Bode saw himself also as 
 a cultural historian\, and\, when planning installations\, felt it his dut
 y to consider the context in which works were created. This lecture will e
 xamine Bode's mode of presentation\, his legacy in Germany and the United 
 States (including the foundation of the Busch-Reisinger Museum)\, and his
