 sation at the Salon of 1882 and marks one of the high points of his career
  in Paris. The lecture will examine the creation of this masterpiece in th
 e heady atmosphere of progressive art in the early 1880s. Sargent's passio
 n for Spanish music and dance\, his deep admiration for the work of Velazq
 uez and Goya\, his debt to Manet\, and his high sense of theatre all find 
 expression in this painterly tour-de-force.\n\nRichard Ormond is a renowne
 d independent art historian and director of the John S. Sargent Catalogue 
 Raisonn&eacute\; Project\, 2000-present. He is the former Director of the 
 National Maritime Museum in London and also served as Assistant Keeper and
  Deputy Director of the National Portrait Gallery\, London. He is currentl
 y the Chairman of the Trustees of the Watts Gallery in Surrey\, England\, 
 Chairman of the Friends of Leighton House in London\, and a trustee of the
  Mariners Museum in Newport News\, Virginia.\n\nThursday evening programmi
