 n: 2012-05-23\nEvent Date End: 2012-05-23\n\nJennifer L. Roberts\, Profess
or of History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University\, will present
the lecture The Printerly Art of Jasper Johns at 6pm.\n\nJasper Johns is
best known as a painter\, but his work has always been closely tied to pri
nt. From his earliest use of newspaper collage and stencils in the 1950s\,
Johns incorporated print media and print processes into his paintings. He
began making prints himself in 1960\, and quickly developed a reputation
as a modern master of lithography\, etching\, and silkscreening. This lect
ure will explore the ways in which the logic of print shapes John's entire
  career\, informing his interest in transfer\, reversal\, repetition\, lay
ering\, and sequence. John's broad impact on modern and contemporary art d
erives largely from his engagement with print processes\, and his work ult
imately helps us to understand the stakes of our ongoing negotiation of th
 e &ldquo\;death&rdquo\;&mdash\;and the future&mdash\;of print.\n\nThis lec
ture coincides with the opening of the exhibition Jasper Johns / In Press:
The Crosshatch Works and the Logic of Print. From 5&ndash\;8pm there will
be a reception in the Sackler lobby and open galleries.\n\nFree admission
 .\n\nStart time: 5:00pm&ndash\;8:00pm
