 rformance as Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas in this feature directed by artist
  Julian Schnabel\, based on Arenas' autobiography of the same name.  From 
 his provincial childhood to his studies in Havana in the 1960s\, the film 
 follows Arenas as he strives to live openly as a homosexual and pursue his
  literary ambitions. Both struggles land him prison many times over the ye
 ars until he decides he must leave his homeland for the United States and 
 a new life.
