  year of &ldquo\;Caring for Christmas.&rdquo\; Each year we explore new di
 mensions of the cultural story of Christmas and celebrations of the season
 . Learn more about how\, when the Puritan settlers came to New England in 
 the 17th  century\, they took a dim view of Christmas celebrations. Until 
 the 19th  century\, not much was made of the holiday in this part of the w
 orld\; it  was even banned at times in some areas. Then\, New Englanders c
 ame to  embrace it with tenderness and joy. In the 19th century a foundati
 on was  laid for the season to become a time of universal goodwill and  he
 ightened cultural awareness. This event includes:\n  *  Local actors takin
 g us back in history\,\n  *  The New England Conservatory Children's Choru
 s and Young Women's Chorale giving voice to a wide repertoire of seasonal 
 songs\,\n  *  and Cellos 352\, a youth ensemble\, adding strings to the af
 ternoon's festivities.\n \nHow You Can 'Care for Christmas'?\nRepresentati
 ves from The Home for Little Wanderers\, Friends of Boston's  Homeless\, a
 nd On the Rise will be on hand to collect monetary donations before and af
 ter the program as well as share information about how  they &ldquo\;care 
 for Christmas&rdquo\; throughout the year.\nYou can also help us care for 
 those in need by donating items from November 25 until December 16. Donate
 d items are tax-deductible. Wish lists for designated charities are on our
  website.
