ston\, MA--Boston's Cathedral of the Holy Cross proudly presents 'Christma
s at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross with The Vienna Boys Choir' on Sunday
\, December 2 at 3:00 P.M. This superb holiday concert will be hosted b
y radio personality and voice of the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, Ron Della
Chiesa. The architecturally significant Cathedral of the Holy Cross\, lo
cated at 1400 Washington Street in Boston's South End\, is the largest Rom
an Catholic church in New England.\nAbout the Vienna Boys Choir:\nIn 1498\
, more than half a millennium ago\, Emperor Maximilian I moved his court a
nd his court musicians from Innsbruck to Vienna. He gave specific instruc
tions that there were to be six boys among his musicians. For want of a f
oundation charter\, historians have settled on 1498 as the official founda
tion date of the Vienna Hofmusikkapelle and - in consequence - the Vienna
Boys' Choir. Until 1918\, the choir sang exclusively for the court\, at m
ass\, at private concerts and functions and on state occasions.\nMusicians
like Heinrich Isaac\, Paul Hofhaimer\, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber\, Johan
n Joseph Fux\, Christoph Willibald Gluck\, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, Anton
io Caldara\, Antonio Salieri and Anton Bruckner worked with the choir. Co
mposers Jacobus Gallus\, Franz Schubert and conductors Hans Richter\, Feli
x Mottl and Clemens Krauss were themselves choristers. Brothers Joseph an
d Michael Haydn were members of the choir of St. Stephen's Cathedral\, and
sang frequently with the imperial boys' choir.\nToday there are around 10
0 choristers between the ages of ten and fourteen\, divided into four tour
ing choirs. The four choirs give around 300 concerts and performances eac
h year in front of almost half a million people with each group spending n
ine to eleven weeks of the school year on tour. They visit virtually all
European countries\, and they are frequent guests in Asia\, Australia and
 the Americas.\n \n
