 antine emperor Michael VIII Paleologos have been found in the modern excav
 ations of Sardis\, in Turkey. We will explore what images the changing dyn
 asties at Sardis put on their coins\, and why we ?nd coins in the ruins of
  many di?erent buildings\, such as the ancient temple of Diana\, the synag
 ogue\, the Imperial Temple\, the theater\, and the houses of Sardis.\nRece
