DESCRIPTION:Event Name: Anthony Coleman + The Damaged Quartet: Seven Words
 \nEvent Url: http://www.artsboston.org/event/detail/441656823/Anthony_Cole
 man_The_Damaged_Quartet_Seven_Words\nEvent Date Begin: 2013-02-06\nEvent D
ate End: 2013-02-06\n\n In the first portion of this concert\, pianist/com
 poser/improviser Anthony Coleman&mdash\; a member of NEC's composition\, j
azz\, and Contemporary Improvisation faculties&mdash\;performs solo at the
piano. In the final portion\, he performs with the quartet that has accom
panied him in 'Damaged by Sunlight' concerts: Ashley Paul on clarinet\, al
to saxophone\, and vocals\; Sean Conly on bass\; and Satoshi Takeishi on d
rums and percussion. The middle portion of the concert pairs Paul with Col
eman on piano and electric organ.\n \nThis quartet\, with bassist Brad Jon
es in lieu of Sean Conly\, appears in a 2010 video performing Damaged by S
unlight.\nAnthony Coleman has supplied these notes:\nAfter several years o
f extravaganzas\, a nice relaxed Chamber Evening with some of my favorite
collaborators. Solo Piano set\, duo with Ashley (connected to the upcoming
disc) and then The Damaged Quartet\, playing at least four of the Seven W
 ords: Autochton\, Irredenta\, Concupiscence\, Judeophilia. And\, by the wa
y\, the Tzadik CD The End of Summer (featuring my NEC Ensemble\, Survivors
Breakfast) is out!\nPart I\nEvery year I like playing solo more and more.
I think I'm finally finding real reasons to do it. I made a sketch (Oogen
era) that functions as a kind of template for improvisation.\nPart II\nAsh
ley Paul was my student when I first came to NEC. She is a rare talent&mda
sh\;one of the most individual musicians I've ever had the pleasure to wor
k with. Playing duo with her is a rich and strange joy.\nPart III\nSeven W
ords explores some allusive verbal objects and the associations I have wit
h them. Some very smart people study the Semiotics of Music. I like to thi
nk about them and riff on them. More than that is too much for my unschema
 tic brain.
