Begin: 2013-02-09\nEvent Date End: 2013-02-09\n\nThe keynote address - Chi
mpanzee Futures in a Crowded World: Lessons from Western Uganda - will be
given by Dr. Richard Wrangham and Dr. Elizabeth Ross. For 25 years\, Dr. W
rangham and Dr. Ross have collaborated inside and outside Uganda's Kibale
National Park to promote a long-term future for more than a thousand chimp
anzees and tens of thousands of people. Dr. Wrangham's research team has w
orked with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to promote eco-tourism and protec
t the rainforest\, uprooted thousands of wildlife snares and monitored the
Kanyawara chimpanzee community\, and discovered fascinating behaviors tha
t are unique to Kibale. Dr. Ross's Kasiisi Project works in 14 forest edge
government primary schools supporting conservation through programs that
promote excellent education\, healthy bodies and environmental stewardship
for nearly 10\,000 children. Between them\, they bring the message of wil
dlife conservation and hope to the next generation of a critically importa
nt growing population living in a volatile area containing some of the wor
ld's most precious wildlife resources. Following the keynote address\, the
re will be panel discussions focused on behavior and enrichment studies as
well as veterinary and husbandry studies. There will also be an opportuni
ty to go behind the scenes at the Zoo.
