DESCRIPTION:Event Name: Coming of Age\nEvent Url: http://www.artsboston.org
 /event/detail/49785/Coming_of_Age\nEvent Date Begin: 2009-11-22\nEvent Dat
e End: 2009-11-22\n\nEach of BCMS's six Sunday concerts at Sanders Theatre
serves to blend the height of the traditional chamber music repertoire fr
om the Classical and Romantic era with an equally astounding modern work.
The program for the second concert in our series includes Mendelssohn's Pi
 ano Quartet in F minor\, Op. 2\; Penderecki's Sextet (2000)\; and Brahms's
Horn Trio in E-flat major\, Op. 40. Featuring Michael Norsworthy\, clarin
 et\; William Purvis\, French horn\; Jonathan Crow\, violin\; Marcus Thomps
on\, viola\; Wilhelmina Smith\, cello and Mihae Lee\, piano. Mendelssohn
's F minor Piano Quartet\, written when the composer was only 14 years old
\, is a remarkable musical accomplishment. Its harmonic structure is bold
and the lyrical intermezzo foreshadows many familiar elements of his more
mature work. The Trio in E-flat by Brahms\, composed in the middle stage o
f his career and a short time after the death of his mother\, uses the Fre
nch horn instead of the more traditional cello as a sentimental remembranc
e of his early study of the instrument. The melancholy Adagio and the jubi
lant finale look back to his childhood with a reference to the German folk
song &ldquo\;In der Weiden steht ein Haus&rdquo\; (&ldquo\;In the Meadow
Stands a House&rdquo\;). Born in 1933\, Penderecki occupies an important p
osition in the music of his native Poland\, while establishing an internat
ional reputation with music that had a wide effect. The Sextet of 2000\, i
n two contrasting movements\, is Penderecki's most substantial chamber wor
 k to date.\n\nStart time: 7:30PM
