RSON'S 'OTHER' FAMILY: THE HEMINGSES OF MONTICELLO Welcome Annette Gordon-
Reed\, winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in history\, will speak about her
book The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family. In this readable ac
count\, she traces the family history of Sally Hemings\, the slave who had
a 38-year relationship with Thomas Jefferson. Hemings arrived at Monticel
lo as the slave (and half-sister) of Martha Wayles\, Jefferson's bride. Af
ter Wayles' death\, Hemings and Jefferson had seven children\, and she and
her family accompanied Jefferson on many of his travels and at home throu
ghout the rest of his life. Through the story of Sally Hemings and her fam
ily\, Gordon-Reed's work exposes the way Americans and historians view the
history of slavery\, and how it affects our ideas about race today. Curre
ntly the Charles Warren Visiting Professor of American Legal History at Ha
rvard\, Gordon-Reed is also the author of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemin
gs: An American Controversy. Free.\n\nStart time: 7:30 PM
