 \nEvent Date Begin: 2010-03-28\nEvent Date End: 2010-03-28\n\nThe Boston C
hamber Music Society presents a suite of early works by Viennese masters a
nd Strauss on Sunday\, March 28 at Sanders Theatre. Mahler's Piano Quartet
(as featured in the recent blockbuster 'Shutter Island') is the only surv
iving chamber work from his student years at the Vienna Conservatory and s
hows Brahms' influence on the young composer at the time. The five early w
orks by Berg\, Schoenberg\, and Webern\, while all short and mostly concis
e exercises in atonality\, are each unique in their treatment of the Secon
d Viennese School style. The Piano Quartet by Richard Strauss is considere
d one of the key works of his youth and shows a new skill in the intricate
handling of musical motives and the subtleties of sonata form\, a result
of his study in Brahms' symphonies and string quartets. Featured musician
 s: Thomas Hill\, clarinet\; Harumi Rhodes and Lucy Chapman\, violins\; Mar
 cus Thompson\, viola\; Astrid Schween\, cello\; Randall Hodgkinson\, piano
