SUMMARY:An Evening with Vik Muniz: Shapiro Celebrity Lecture
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Event Name: An Evening with Vik Muniz: Shapiro Celebrity Lecture=0D=0AEvent Url: http://www.artsboston.org/event/detail/42377=0D=0AEvent Date Begin: 2009-04-16=0D=0AEvent Date End: 2009-04-16=0D=0A=0D=0AVik Muniz uses unconventional materials to recreate well-known works of art or images from popular culture-rendering Caravaggio's Medusa in spaghetti, a Warhol-like Double Mona Lisa in peanut butter and jelly-then photographs these creations as what he calls 'photographic delusions.' He made drawings based on photographs of the Whitney Museum's galleries with dust collected by the Whitney's maintenance staff; redrew photographs of the children of sugar plantation workers in sugar on black paper. To quote New York Times critic Vicki Goldberg, 'Vik Muniz's work tells us that seeing is not quite believing, that perceiving and understanding are balancing acts, that experience itself is a see-saw. . .' In December 2008, The Museum of Modern Art opens 'Artist's Choice: Vik Muniz,' curated by the artist from MoMAs collections. As witty in person as in his art, Muniz discusses his process and the philosophy that lies behind works that have been described as 'an idea wrapped up in surprise and laughter.'=0D=0A=0D=0AStart time:6:30 - 8pm
