He performs traditional and regional genres including choro, frevo, and baião, with a contemporary approach that includes experimentation and improvisation. Cortes is also an academic researcher working towards a Ph.D. in popular music performance. He has played and held workshops all over Brazil, the U.S., and Europe, and recorded two CDs.
