He worked for many years as a reporter and spent a decade overseas as a foreign correspondent in Australia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. After returning to the United States, he won the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting and worked as a staff writer for The New Yorker before becoming a full-time author. Four of his books have been national bestsellers. In Confederates in the Attic (1999), Horwitz embarked on a search through the American South for places and people still held in thrall by America's greatest conflict, where the ghosts of the Lost Cause are resurrected through ritual and remembrance.
