The process of=0D=0A=improvisation combines the distinctive voices of its individual=0D=0A=performers. The music that results is often surprising, unconventional=0D=0A=and dynamic. It s not uncommon to hear music made of electronic=0D=0A=crackles, noisy multi-phonics, gurgling, hissing, quiet=0D=0A=vocalized gibberish, atonal noodling, bowed metal, blowing sounds,=0D=0A=post-everything harmony, and a thousand shades of hullabaloo.=0D=0A==0D=0A=You may also see video and dance cohabitating with buzzes, clicks,=0D=0A=drones, wooshes, and bleeps in a bizarre galaxy of pitch and spectra!=0D=0A==0D=0A=_______________________________________=0D=0A==0D=0A=Some Performer Bios=0D=0A==0D=0A=Multi-reedist Steve Norton is best known for his work with the 1990s=0D=0A=Boston-based band Debris. Debris was an ambitious, exuberant, puzzling=0D=0A=band that puzzled together serialism, free jazz and funk. Their music=0D=0A=is in equal measure exhilarating and exhausting. It was the=0D=0A=combination, in part, that burned Norton out about ten years ago, as=0D=0A=well as a need to attend to his job and family. Back in full force now,=0D=0A=at fighting weight, with drive and direction and reinvigorated sound,=0D=0A=he's steaming. Recent projects include the duck-call trio, Duck That,=0D=0A=with Joshua Jefferson and Angela Sawyer; Matt Samolis' Metal and Glass=0D=0A=Ensemble; a trio-without-name performing a stunning rendition of Steve=0D=0A=Lacy's 'Tips,' with Noell Dorsey on voice and Samolis on flute; and a=0D=0A=duo with Vic Rawlings, Symptomatic.=0D=0A==0D=0A=Composer / performer Jeremy Starpoli has been developing his unique=0D=0A=musical interests in the northeast United States for over two decades.=0D=0A=His original music explores our perception of the fundamental=0D=0A=parameters of musical sound (pitch, rhythm, dynamics and tone color) as=0D=0A=a basis for creating detailed worlds of sound in a variety of styles.=0D=0A=As a composer, Starpoli's interest in sound as a perceptual substance=0D=0A=motivates endless variations of musical material. As an performer,=0D=0A=Starpoli has over fifteen years experience performing on slide trombone=0D=0A=as well as a variety of bass strings and percussion instruments. Based=0D=0A=in Western Massachusetts, Starpoli has collaborated with many regional=0D=0A=and internationally-known musicians such as Joe McPhee, Jessica Pavone,=0D=0A=Dan Greenwood (a.k.a. Diagram A), Ben Karetnick, Cliff White, and many=0D=0A=others. He has performed with groups such his own RICEnsemble, the=0D=0A=Middletown (CT) Creative Orchestra, power-noise-core band Squidlaunch,=0D=0A=etc. His approach to the trombone utilizes a wide variety of=0D=0A=conventional and extended techniques, allowing for diverse sound-types=0D=0A=and moods. The music of J Starpoli is noisy and passionate at times,=0D=0A=at others it is textural or rhythmic or melodic, crossing many styles=0D=0A=and sounds in a constant exploration. Follow the sound.=0D=0A==0D=0A=Vic Rawlings (Boston- amplifier/ prepared cello, speaker elements/=0D=0A=exposed circuitry) employs a still and unstable sound language that=0D=0A=traverses from the visceral excess of the Laurence Cook Disaster Unit=0D=0A=to the extreme austerity of undr quartet. He has designed and built 2=0D=0A=separate instruments to realize this aesthetic, including extensive and=0D=0A=invasive cello preparations- some directly based on obscure baroque=0D=0A=instrumentation. The amplified cello is used as a resonant wooden=0D=0A=microphone. He also continually develops an electronic instrument from=0D=0A=the exposed circuit boards of sound processors, effectively producing=0D=0A=an analog synthesizer with a highly unstable interface. This=0D=0A=electronic instrument is realized by a flexible array of exposed=0D=0A=speaker elements, chosen for their often unpredictable and=0D=0A=idiosyncratic acoustic qualities. His solo performances deny=0D=0A=conventional assumptions about the use of time and refuse alliance with=0D=0A=dominant trends in improvised music.=0D=0A==0D=0A=More information available on the web: www.opensound.org=0D=0A=0D=0AStart time:Doors open at 7:30. / music at 8:00 p.m.
