Learn more about how, when the Puritan settlers came to New England in the 17th century, they took a dim view of Christmas celebrations. Until the 19th century, not much was made of the holiday in this part of the world; it was even banned at times in some areas. Then, New Englanders came to embrace it with tenderness and joy. In the 19th century a foundation was laid for the season to become a time of universal goodwill and heightened cultural awareness.
