The Shostakovich Piano Quintet that follows received so much enthusiasm from the audience upon its premiere that the final two movements were performed again, a tradition sometimes observed today with enough prodding. The program concludes with arguably the greatest work in the chamber music repertoire, Schubert's String Quintet in C major.
