SUMMARY:AN EVENING OF ENTERTAINMENTS from AUGUST STRINDBERG
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Event Name: AN EVENING OF ENTERTAINMENTS from AUGUST STRINDBERG=0D=0AEvent Url: http://www.artsboston.org/event/detail/441655312=0D=0AEvent Date Begin: 2012-12-15=0D=0AEvent Date End: 2012-12-15=0D=0A=0D=0AAN EVENING OF ENTERTAINMENTS from AUGUST STRINDBERG=0D=0A=Swedish playwright August Strindberg's 1889 'quart d'heure' looks deceptively simple. Two women run into one another in a cafe on Christmas eve. One is married, one is unmarried. Both are actresses. Only one speaks. The scene is barely ten minutes long. But the play activates a series of ambiguous interpretations, turning around the question inherent in the title: who is the stronger? =0D=0A==0D=0A=So, we're going to spend the evening teasing this thing out. Two actresses have learned both roles in a new translation, and will perform one side (or BOTH?!) according to their whims, your whims, or rock-paper-scissors. Following the performance, we will screen Ingmar Bergman's PERSONA, which draws its inspiration from THE STRONGER. Bergman seems to tease Strindberg's characters across 85 minutes of screen time (not to mention Liv Ullman and Bibi Andersson's glorious cheekbones). =0D=0A=In the interest of the contrapuntal of Strindberg's setting, we're throwing the play during the Christmas season. So, when you've finished wrestling for a Tickle-me-Elmo, please come by. We're happy to host a kind of alternative.=0D=0A=Wine.
