The opera tells of the small English town of Loxford in 1900. The powers that be have decided to revive the old tradition of crowning the most virginal girl in town May Queen in hopes of combating the rise of debauchery among the village young people. There is only one problem: no girl in Loxford is virginal enough to qualify. The choice falls instead on Albert Herring, a young grocer's clerk, but the introverted Albert cannot cope with the combined attentions of the village council, his more sexually liberated compatriots, and his overbearing mother. Albert must decide: to be virtuous or not to be virtuous? Based on the Guy de Maupassant short story, libretto by Eric Crozier, music by Benjamin Britten.=0D=0A=0D=0AStart time:8:30 PM
