DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Event Name: Signs of Spring: A suite of early works by Viennese masters and Strauss=0D=0AEvent Url: http://www.artsboston.org/event/detail/57106=0D=0AEvent Date Begin: 2010-03-28=0D=0AEvent Date End: 2010-03-28=0D=0A=0D=0AThe Boston Chamber Music Society presents a suite of early works by Viennese masters and Strauss on Sunday, March 28 at Sanders Theatre. Mahler's Piano Quartet (as featured in the recent blockbuster 'Shutter Island') is the only surviving chamber work from his student years at the Vienna Conservatory and shows Brahms' influence on the young composer at the time. The five early works by Berg, Schoenberg, and Webern, while all short and mostly concise exercises in atonality, are each unique in their treatment of the Second Viennese School style. The Piano Quartet by Richard Strauss is considered one of the key works of his youth and shows a new skill in the intricate handling of musical motives and the subtleties of sonata form, a result of his study in Brahms' symphonies and string quartets. Featured musicians: Thomas Hill, clarinet; Harumi Rhodes and Lucy Chapman, violins; Marcus Thompson, viola; Astrid Schween, cello; Randall Hodgkinson, piano=0D=0A=0D=0AStart time:7:30 p.m.
