Critiques and field trips will be complimented by close examination of contemporary and classic fine art and documentary projects by major photographers. The instructor's own professional career as a curator–as well as photographer and photographic historian– will add a unique dimension to this course. Bonnell Robinson is a highly respected professor, curator and photographer. Robinson teaches senior portfolio, critical theory, documentary, art history and contemporary trends in photography and film at the Art Institute of Boston, where she also is Director of Exhibitions. She has worked with photographers and artists from all media in her capacity as a curator. Exhibitions of note include photographers Duane Michals, Eugene Richards, Susan Meiselas, Luis Gonzalez Palma, Alex Webb, James Nachtwey. Other exhibitions of note include 19th Century Photography in Japan, a retrospective of expeditionary photography in Egypt 1845-1998, Felix Beato in China and Japan, MAGNUM Photographers in War, and Contemporary Cuban Art 1985-2000. Her own photographs have been shown at Addision Gallery of American Art, Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, Rhode Island School of Design, Smithsonian Institution, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Irish Architectural Archives, Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas (Venezuela), and most recently Rick Wester Fine Arts in Chelsea, NYC. Robinson has taught undergraduate and graduate photography at Mass Art, RISD, BU (photographic history), and Brandeis. She has also taught at the Maine Photo Workshops.
