Peter Child Louisa's Letters World premiere: Featuring Joyce Kulhawik, narrator; Simmons College Chorale women of Chorus ProMusica; Elliott Carter Remembrance; Henri Dutilleux L'arbre des songes; First Boston performance Danielle Maddon, soloist Antonin Dvorak Symphony No. 8 in G.
In honor of his 100th year, New England Philharmonic is performing Carter's recent Remembrance, featuring trombone against an atmospheric background, coupled with the work of another senior composer, Dutilleux, who, like Carter, is still productive: a performance of his violin concerto, subtitled Tree of Dreams. Peter Child's new work draws on the letters of Louisa May Alcott and other American women to family members in battle during the Civil War, and a comparable European appreciation of the American spirit may be discovered in Dvorak's Symphony.
