Jorge Grossman - Pasiphae; 2008-2009 Call for Scores winner First Boston performance Robert Schumann Overture, Scherzo & Finale Gunther Schuller Cello Concerto. First Boston performance Jan Muller-Szeraws, soloist Steven Stucky Second Concerto for Orchestra. Schumann's near-symphony Overture, Scherzo & Finale deserves to be heard much more often. Schuller's Cello Concerto, written when he was only 19, shows his early brilliance, but like Schumann's piece, it has suffered from lack of exposure: this will only be its second performance. In contrast, Steven Stucky's gorgeous Second Concerto for Orchestra won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize; perhaps similar fortune awaits our Call for Scores Winner Jorge Grossman and his depiction of Pasiphae, the Greek goddess-mother of the Minotaur.
