Come! Sample the flavors of the British Isles (yes, they were all Celts originally). Music full of Irish melodies by John Williams, his suite from the movie starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, Far and Away and by Stanford, his Irish Rhapsody No.5, only the third performance of this delicious piece in this country since 1917. Music inspired by adventures in the Scottish Highlands by Berlioz and Bruch, Rob Roy Overture and The Scottish Fantasy; and English music inspired by the English 17th Century metaphysical poet Giles Fletcher, Lyra Angelica, made famous when Michelle Kwan skated to it in the 1998 National Championships. Soloists for this feast of melody are husband and wife team, violinist Joseph Scheer, Concert Master of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and Newton native, harpist Susan Robinson, principal harpist of the National Opera and of the Boston Pops Esplanade orchestra. We will be joined by the head of the Stanford Society for a discussion of the Fifth Irish Rhapsody during the free pre concert lecture.
