Haydn "Clock" Symphony & Trumpet Concerto
Villa-Lobos Cello Concerto No.2, Amazonas, Alvorada na floresta tropical (Dawn in the Tropical Forest)
Travel to two very different locales with SPM: the courtly 18th century Austria of Haydn and the exuberant 20th century Brazil of Villa-Lobos. Haydn's charming "Clock" Symphony (named for the "tick-tock" background of its 2nd movement) and ever-popular Trumpet Concerto exemplify his witty, elegant style. Villa-Lobos's works, melding European musical forms with Brazilian folk material, are earthy, passionate, and mysterious. In the fifty years since Villa-Lobos's death, his place as the pre-eminent South American composer of the 20th century has become apparent.
