    Bach: St. Matthew Passion

Presented by at Emmanuel Church, Boston

    April 3 - April 5, 2009

    Bach: St. Matthew Passion

Bach St. Matthew Passion will be performed by the Orchestra and Chorus of Emmanuel Music, conducted by Acting Artistic Director John Harbison, with the Boston Children's Chorus. Soloists are Charles Blandy and Donald Wilkinson. At the time that Bach wrote the St. Matthew Passion, it was the largest, most intricately constructed, expressively voiced, and comprehensively ambitious composition any composer had ever presented. So it remains today in the sheer magnitude of its achievement. It is composed in Bach's most lucid and public manner, always in search of emotional truth. The St. Matthew Passion came directly out of Bach's most intense four years of Cantata composition. It synthesized and transcended all his previous work in the realm of liturgical music. The Emmanuel musicians' performance brings the depth of knowledge and interpretation that comes from their many years of performing this great music every Sunday.
