Though not composed as a cycle, the six J.S. Bach coral motets form a varied and ambitious evening of choral music, seldom if ever heard together in Boston in a single program. Each motet was composed for a separate occasion, generally the funeral of an important person, allowing the composer to select texts of unusual beauty and variety. A complete evening of Bach motets illustrates the virtuosity of the Emmanuel Chorus, developed by performing Bach's sacred choral music in the weekly Sunday services at Emmanuel Church.
