Set sail for the Caribbean with this raucous and rowdy update of the musical comedy classic, complete with swordfights, sex appeal, Gilbert's trademark wit, and Sullivan's glorious music. This young, brilliant creative team has adapted The Pirates of Penzance in a way that promises it won't be your grandmother's Gilbert and Sullivan.

      Yes, the Pirate King plays it as Johnny Depp might, and what was once a wonderful farce about an old maid talking a young hunk into believing she was the pinnacle of womanhood, has been turned into pure sex play, but dear newspaper reviewers this is what art has done for hundreds of years, adapted to the taste of the masses. This version was funny, and light, and accessible, and brilliantly danced, well acted, and fun. No longer a comment of British mores, it was just a good time, which we all are allowed on occasion.       I just took my 70+ parents. They loved it and came home and told my 18-year old son all about it. So he took his girlfriend and they both loved it. Truly a show for all ages!

Any critic who did not like it should get their nose off the ceiling and read G&S;in books only, because theater is fun, entertaining, professional and alive and well at the Huntington. Collapse

      My husband and I have been long-time followers of Gilbert and Sullivan. Although this was a parody in parts, we felt it was lots of fun to watch. Great voices, enjoyable dances.

      I've performed in "Pirates" several times and I thought it was so clever how they changed the lyrics in certain songs, or used a mix of the real lyrics and new lyrics for a funny mashup of G&S;. The energy of the cast was outstanding, and the costumes and lighting were amazing. The actors really engaged the audience, and everyone left the theater smiling. Great job, Huntington Theatre Company!! Collapse

      Excellent singing, creative and energetic choreography, very clever writing and adaptation of G & S lyrics and style. Lots of laughs. We couldn't have asked for more.

      I thought that this version was hideous and did no justice to Gilbert and Sullivan. I agree with Ms. Kennedy's review in the Boston Globe...in every way! This is not what I went to the theater to see. I did not go to see disgraceful characters who milked the practice of drinking literally ad nauseam and vomitam; I did not go to hear music which was barely reminiscent of the original; I did not go to see a modern-day non-operetta, where formerly there was a spunky operetta.       I started watching this with mixed feelings - I love G&S;but I'm not usually keen on musicals with dance. But my suspicions were lulled and I was quickly charmed by the show. It kept the true spirit of a Gilbert and Sullivan musical, updated a little for modern sensibilities, with a judicious dose of Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow thrown in. The music, the singing, the casting, the costumes, the sets, the choreography - all of it was really well done. I laughed through the whole thing. Well done, Huntington Theatre! It's the pirate's life for me! Collapse

      I started watching this with mixed feelings - I love G&S;but I'm not usually keen on musicals with dance. But my suspicions were lulled and I was quickly charmed by the show. It kept the true spirit of a Gilbert and Sullivan musical, updated a little for modern sensibilities, with a judicious dose of Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow thrown in. The music, the singing, the casting, the costumes, the sets, the choreography - all of it was really well done. I laughed through the whole thing. Well done, Huntington Theatre! It's the pirate's life for me! Collapse
