Joanna Chapman-Smith @ The Middle East Corner
March 27, 2009
FREE! Joanna Chapman-Smith has music running through her veins. She grew up in a musical family that has its roots in New Zealand, Italy and Brazil and her songs are as eclectic as her upbringing. Joanna's style cuts across genre boundaries blending old style Eastern European folk with jazzy vocals and playful guitar work. On stage, Joanna is a dynamic and engaging performer. Her quirky sense of humour and feisty personality draw people in. A multi-instrumentalist with a stunning voice that would melt the hardest of hearts, Joanna is a gifted musician who delivers beautiful lyrics with rare, emotionally infused skill that leaves her audiences speechless, almost breathless, after every song she sings. In 2006 Joanna completed her first full-length album, Eyre Corvidae (2007). Joanna's passion and her joy of life come across in this touching collection of folk songs. Even when serious, this music remains uplifting. Joanna is getting ready to release her second album ("Contraries" 2009) on January 30th at the Ukrainian Hall in Vancouver. Contraries was recorded at Rear Window Sound & Song with Co-Producer Adam Popowitz (Mariam Matossian, T. Nile). This album represents the high energy and innovation of Joanna's new repertoire. Joining her on this recording is a boistrous ensemble, including Wayne Adams on bgs & percussion, Dawn Zoe on bgs & accordion and Justine Fischer on bgs & stand-up bass.
