      The Stoneham Theater is to be congratulated for reviving this excellent play, which I can't recall being staged in this area for many years. Other theater companies will surely follow suit. The actors were all very good, with Dee Nelson never missing a beat as a mother who doesn't want her beautiful daughter to get involved with the wrong kind of man her husband turned out to be. Emily Graham-Handley, a college senior, was remarkable, appearing and acting no older than the mid-teen tomboy she portrayed. Director Caitlin Lowans generally did a good job, though there were noticeable problems with two scenes. One involves a man who forces a lonely schoolmarm to beg him to marry her. Lowans focused on his humorous wish to escape marriage rather than on the teacher's horrible humiliation. The end of the play was also rushed, softening the impact of a lot of dramatic dramatic points involving a lot of characters. Charles Morgan's excellent set reflected every penny in his budget.       The Stoneham Theater has grown and is finally showing some maturity in this production. In the past, I felt many of the show seemed less than professional. With Picnic, the troupe was very good.... Expand

      The Stoneham Theater has grown and is finally showing some maturity in this production. In the past, I felt many of the show seemed less than professional. With Picnic, the troupe was very good. Picnic reminds us the 1950's are not as wonderful as the nostalgia we have for the era. Mores may change but wants and desires are the same. This is why Picnic still is an exploration of the human condition of the repressed 1950's. Collapse
