Kennedy Building, Room 406 In her sculptures, Huma Bhabha works with common materials such as chicken wire, unfired clay, Styrofoam, fiberglass, and insulation foam to create works that have tactility at their core. With these materials she builds evocative figures and constructions rich with narrative that simultaneously evoke totems and industrial models. Bhabha sculpts visceral forms with construction detritus that reflect contemporary anxieties; the cracked, crumbling, and fragile objects convey themes of cultural fictions and the nature of the body. While referring to current political situations as well as the human condition at large, the visual cues in her work subversively mine the archives of modern and contemporary Western art. Bhabha was born in Karachi, Pakistan and currently lives in New York. She is the recipient of the 2008 Emerging Artist Award at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut. She has exhibited internationally in countries including Pakistan, Mexico, Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands, as well as across the United States. Recently, she was included in the "Greater New York" exhibition at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, NY and the "USA Today" exhibition at The Royal Academy in London.
