Isabella d'Este and Lucrezia Borgia were the two most vivid and powerful women of early 16th-century Northern Italy. They were often rivals, competing for influence as well as for the attention of the men around them. But they shared a love of music and the arts and were both great patrons of the leading composers and musicians of the day.
