Add Review/Comment
In this day-long seminar, consider questions on the role of science as a model for art. Does art draw on science for useful models, or just for superficial similarities? Morning Session: 10:30 am Keynote speaker Adam Gopnik discusses the relationship between Darwinism and art, and whether evolutionary psychology or evolutionary aesthetics makes sense to explain art. Installation artist Nell Breyer addresses how visual, sensory motor, and memory representations create what we understand as human motion. Lunch Break: 12:30 pm Afternoon Session: 1:30 pm Art critic Blake Gopnik states, "Artists have always responded to science and technology." Examine art historical precedents for today's intersection of science and art, then discuss current examples by artists including Jeff Wall and Douglas Gordon. Artist Spencer Finch discusses "The Beauty of the Scientific Method" and how the aesthetics of experimentation inform his practice as an artist. In a round-table discussion, speakers and audience members reflect and ask questions about art, science, and technology connections.
