Half Kenyan and half American, Extra Golden first gained recognition when then-Senator Obama helped the band obtain work visas to come to the United States for their debut tour. In gratitude, they recorded the song "Obama," thanking him and others who helped; praise songs like this are part of the musical tradition which forms the basis of Extra Golden's unique fusion of Kenyan benga and American rock. Benga is a popular form of guitar-driven, upbeat Kenyan pop. Extra Golden deftly blends this with 60's garage and psychedelia to come up with a truly unique, energetic sounding Afro-Pop. Their third album, Thank You Very Quickly, is out now on Thrill Jockey and the band is touring the UK in this month as part of the prestigious African Soul Rebels tour with international stars Oliver Mtudkuzi and Baaba Maal.
