Debra Davidson: Paintings
March 7 - May 17, 2009
Deborah Davidson is an artist in love with language, using text to create complex visual images. "Language has been seeping into my work, insinuating itself for the past ten years,â" she has said. "I am interested in the evolution of image as an analogy, a shadow of the text." Using cut out shapes that are collaged into painting, Davidson enters into a complicated process of wearing down the surface and then building it up again. "Having developed from the use of actual language, the forms become a personal hieroglyph. Underlying the paintings is the attempt to resolve the conversation between wanting to reveal and at the same time the desire to obliterate."
