It’s a rush to be so close to the dancers that you can practically touch them.” The Improper Bostonian Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre closes its 24th season with a bang with the season finale, Uncontainable. One revival work, one world premiere and endless inspiration by New England’s most celebrated dance-maker, Jose Mateo. Enjoy a new way to experience ballet with cabaret-style seating, close-up view of the dancers, and cocktails during the show. Uncontainable feature’s Mateo’s fast-paced and dynamic Fearless Symmetries, awarded The Boston Globe’s Top Ten in Dance. Set to John Adams’ Fearful Symmetries, a young woman is swept by the appeal of contemporary urban life and then overwhelmed by its very unpredictable forces. Uncontainable also includes a world premiere set to Alfred Schnittke’s Concerto for Piano and Strings, composed in 1979. Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre’s Uncontainable offers Boston audiences the only opportunity to see new classical ballet. Each work is customized for its glorious 5,000 square foot Sanctuary Theatre in Harvard Square for an intimate experience unlike any other in dance performance.

      This is a stellar (x5!) program, which I found mesmerizing throughout. One need not know the storyline to fully appreciate the passion, grace and skill of these polished dancers. Their beauty, timing... Expand

      This is a stellar (x5!) program, which I found mesmerizing throughout. One need not know the storyline to fully appreciate the passion, grace and skill of these polished dancers. Their beauty, timing and placement were also duly noted by my mother, who, in her youth, studied with Boston's finest dance masters. Kudos to Jose Mateo for his unique choreography and staging. He simultaneously frees his dancers and connects them with the audience through artful lighting, subtle costume design, and skillful interweaving of complex music and movement. His craft, matched by their skill, render the audience, but none of the dancers, breathless (and wanting more)! Collapse

      This was a wonderful evening. Two beautiful ballets. Both very sensuous and emotional. The intimate seating which allows you to be so close to the dancers and the very simple and form-fitting costumes each served to emphasize the beautiful, natural lines of the dancers' bodies. We enjoyed this so much. The setting is also so wonderful. We enjoy the cabaret seating, listening to the piano player as you come in and during the intermissions, and being able to have a beer or wine as you sit and watch the performance. I recommend this to anyone. Collapse
