Beyond the Gamut: Chromaticism in the Renaissance

Convivium’s Spring 2010 program explores the unique soundscape of Renaissance chromaticism, the use of pitches outside the “gamut” or set of pitches whose modern equivalent is the diatonic scale. The program includes works by Orlando di Lasso (the complete Sybilline Prophecies of 1564), Hans Leo Hassler, Alexander Utendal, Jakob Handl, Heinrich Schütz and Michelangelo Rossi, whose madrigals surpass even Gesualdo’s in their chromatic daring. There will even be a cameo appearance by a famous 20th century composer.
