Margaret Wise Brown Day at The Carle May 15, 2010 11:00 am – 5:00 pm Free with Museum Admission Join us in a celebration of the centennial of Margaret Wise Brown. Hear some of her classic works as well as one of her newly discovered manuscripts and learn about how Brown and her editor, Ursula Nordstrom, changed literature for the very young. In the Studio: Throughout the day Special Studio Activity In the Reading Library: Throughout the day A display featuring a “collage/quilt” given to the Museum by Harriett Barton featuring Ursula Nordstrom surrounded by artifacts from classic early children's books she'd edited, including work by Eric Carle, Lois Lenski, Jose Aruego and others. 11:00 am - 12:00 Fathers Are Coming Home written by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Stephen Savage Meet Stephen Savage, the illustrator of one of Brown’s manuscripts written over 60 years ago. See how simple lines and color convey the emotion and sweetness in this book about fathers returning safe and sound, to their families and homes. Book signing to follow In the Auditorium 10:30 am – 11:00 am Film Goodnight Moon and other Sleepytime Tales 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm Children’s Concert with Uncle Rock (admission fee) 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm Good Books for Bad Children: Remembering Margaret Wise Brown and Ursula Nordstrom (1 PDP) Biographer Leonard Marcus offers a fascinating glimpse into how Brown and Nordstrom joined forces to re-imagine the picture book in the spirit of progressive education and modern art, creating "good books for bad children" that have lasted for generations.
