The Coolidge Corner Theatre hosts a one-night-only screening of They Came to Play, an award-winning documentary chronicling the passion, the pressure, and the potential surrounding the Fifth International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs, a prestigious event hosted by The Van Cliburn Foundation. Players from all over the world, ranging from self-taught to classically-trained, aged 35 to almost 80, convene in Fort Worth, Texas for a week of intense competition, music and camaraderie. Entertaining, irreverent, and inspiring, the film provides an intimate look into the lives of these colorful, multi-faceted contenders as they strive to balance the demands of work and family with their love of music. Years of dedicated preparation culminate in critical performances before a professional jury and a discerning audience during a series of nerve-wracking elimination rounds. Three local competitors who appear in the film -- Suzanna Perez, Robert Finley and Richard Einhorn -- will perform following the screening. They will be joined after their performances by Ellen Weiss Dodson, also a competitor, for Q & A.
